So not only do I worry that pop music in yoga class is evidence of how we’ve usurped an eastern practice and made it into one that subsidizes our fear of self instead of confronting it, but I’m also concerned about the role yoga studios play in the communities they enter. When I was in graduate school a professor commented that one of the first signs of gentrification in any community was white women with yoga mats walking down the street.  Ouch. Yoga is about fostering a relationship with yourself and others that promotes connection and respect, so it’s disturbing that one of the first signs of a community being pushed out of its space is the presence of a yoga studio. Now, at least here in DC, these small businesses do often demonstrate an active commitment to enriching their neighborhoods and contributing to those communities and the city as…
